Virtual try on clothes: who it's for and where it stops

An AI virtual try on takes two pictures and returns one: the person from the first, wearing the garment from the second. It is useful well before and well after a purchase, as long as you know it shows how something looks, not how it fits.

• Shoppers: try clothes on before you buy

  Save the product photo from a store page, upload a front-facing photo of yourself, and see the colour and pattern on you instead of on the store's model. It is the quickest way to rule out a print or a colour that doesn't suit you.

• Sellers: put a product on a model

  Shoot the garment flat on a plain background and put it on a model photo you already have the rights to. One model shot can carry a whole range of tops, which saves a photo session per item.

• It shows the look, not the fit

  The model has no idea of your measurements or the garment's size chart. It drapes the piece plausibly on the body in the photo; it cannot tell you whether a medium will be tight across the shoulders. Use it for colour, pattern and style, and the size chart for fit.

  The instruction is written and tested for garments: tops, shirts, jackets, dresses. Glasses, jewellery, hats and shoes are not what it is built for, and results on them are unpredictable.
