How to put text behind an image
A text behind image effect is depth, not a flat caption: the subject stays in front and the lettering sits on the background plane. This page is a thin tool for that one job — not a Canva project or a Photoshop layer stack.
Upload the photo
Portraits, product shots and street photos all work when the subject has a readable outline. Phone JPGs are fine up to 10 MB.
Describe the text and type style
Example: ALEX in bold white sans-serif, large behind the shoulders. Name the words, weight, colour and where the type should sit.
Check occlusion and spelling
The subject should cover parts of the letters. If the text floats on top instead, rerun with behind the subject, partially covered by hair and shoulders.
Vs Canva and Photoshop
Canva and Photoshop need a cutout, a text layer and manual masking to fake depth. Here you upload once, type the words and the model places them as an underlay. No layer panel, no pen tool.
When a flat caption is enough
If you only need a subtitle under the frame, a normal editor is faster. Use this tool when you want poster depth with the person in front of the type.
Why Text Behind Image on AI Image Tools
Depth underlay, not a sticker
The instruction places lettering behind the subject so hair, shoulders or the product occlude the type.
Exact words, legible type
You control the copy. Short names and poster titles stay readable; describe weight and colour when it matters.
Identity and framing stay put
The subject, pose and composition are preserved — only the background gains the text underlay.
A thin tool page
No Canva board or Photoshop file. One upload, one prompt, download from My Creations.

How to use Text Behind Image
- Step 1
Upload your photo
Pick a shot with a clear subject and some empty space behind them for the lettering.
- Step 2
Type the text to place behind
Include the words and a short style note. Click an example chip to start from a poster-style prompt.
- Step 3
Generate and check the depth
Confirm the subject sits in front of the type and the spelling is right before you download.
Get a better result
A few choices before you upload change the output more than any setting on this page.
A clear subject with clean edges
Hair, shoulders or a product silhouette need to read against the background. Soft, busy backgrounds make the lettering hard to tuck behind.
Leave room for the words
Centered headshots with empty sky or wall behind the shoulders work best. Cropped-tight faces leave nowhere for large type.
Write the exact words you want
The model renders the text you type. Spell names carefully; short poster phrases beat long sentences.
How to write a prompt for Text Behind Image
Lead with the exact words
Put the copy first in caps or quotes: MARIA, SUMMER, EST. 1998.
Name weight and colour
Bold white sans-serif, thin black caps, soft cream condensed lettering.
Say it sits behind
Add behind the subject, underlay, or partially covered by shoulders so the model does not stamp type on top.
Keep phrases short
One to four words reads as a poster. Long sentences turn into mushy letterforms.

Text Behind Image: frequently asked questions
Will the text go behind the person or on top?
The tool is instructed to place the text behind the main subject as a depth underlay. If a run lands on top, add behind the subject, partially occluded and try again.
Can I choose the font?
Describe the look in words — bold sans-serif, thin caps, condensed poster type. There is no font picker; the model interprets the description.
Does it keep my face the same?
Yes. Identity, pose and framing are preserved; only the background gains the lettering. Compare at full size if anything looks off.
Is this better than Canva or Photoshop for text behind image?
For a quick poster-style underlay, yes: no cutout or mask steps. For pixel-perfect brand type with a licensed font file, a design tool still wins.
Can I put text behind a photo for free?
Signing in gives you 10 credits, and one run on the default model costs 5 credits: 2 text-behind images before you pay. Free-plan downloads carry a small watermark.
Which model should I pick?
Start with FLUX.1 Kontext: it is the fastest for edits and costs 5 credits. Nano Banana follows instructions very closely but can take a few minutes when busy. GPT Image 2.5 and Seedream 5 Pro give the most detail at 13 to 20 credits.
What happens if a generation fails?
You are only charged when an image comes back. If the model fails or times out, nothing is deducted and you can simply run it again.
What happens to my photos?
Your upload is sent to the model provider only to produce the result. The result is stored in your My Creations gallery on our own storage, and you can delete it there at any time.
Can I use the results commercially?
You keep ownership of what you upload and what you generate, on every plan; see the Terms of Service. Free downloads carry a small watermark, paid plans download without one.
